SCM Saw Dust Collection

It’s been 3+ years of this machine spewing dust all over my shop.  Time to put that to an end!

Most of the machines in my shop have good dust collection going for them – but the Dewalt SCMS was not one of them.  And this thing not only creates a lot of dust, the 12″ spinning blade spews that dust all over the shop.  I finally decided (and I had the time) to create a dust shroud and hook it up to my dust collector.

I took a lot of inspiration from this thread over at the Wood Talk Online forums.  What I created is very straightforward: I simply made two sides following the contour of the machine and bench and then connected them to form a closed box (with open front).

In order to make it as quickly as possible, I decided to build the shroud so that it only works in the 90 degree position – this makes for a very small box and it goes together quickly and sits in place easily.  I make 90 degree cuts about 98% of the time – and the shroud is easy to remove when I need to swing or bevel the saw.

I’m so happy to finally have this in place.  And it also works without the dust collector turned on, for those times when I’m just making a quick cut for something – perfect.  I definitely recommend stop putting it off and start collection the dust from this machine in your shop!
